This factor makes them the third largest plant family in terms of number of species, behind Asteraceae and Orchidaceae. Also, Fabaceae is the most common plant family in tropical rain forests and dry forests in the Americas and Africa.

This plant shows specific characteristics in terms of its morphology and floral development, which clearly separates them from any remaining Fabaceae. It can be found in nature as a woody vine, with a length of about 2 m or as a small tree with about 8 m high. Its distribution is between 1 and 500 masl in savannahs and forests regenerated with Musanga. They are also in terraced streams and coastal scrubland. The Guinean-Congolese region has been reported to show the widest range of species and the greater morphologic variability, particularly in Gabon. Gilbertiodendron grandistipulatum (Leguminosae-Caesalpinioideae), is a unique species of west-central Africa which represents a new record for Congo (Brazzaville).
